Both the boat and its passengers were lucky to escape injury:
Turkey’s coastguard has been filmed using sticks against a boat full of asylum seekers in the Aegean Sea.
The video, published by the BBC and on social media, shows two men hitting the boat and asylum seekers as they cower away and a woman screams.
That’s from ABC News under the headline: “Turkish coastguard filmed bashing asylum seeker boat with sticks in Aegean Sea”.
The BBC News item from which it derives is slightly different:
The BBC has been given a video showing Turkish coastguard using sticks against a boat full of migrants as they sail to Greece in the Aegean Sea.
The incident is said to have happened in Turkish waters as the migrants were on their way to the island of Lesbos.
The migrants accused the coastguard of attacking them, but the coastguard say they were trying to stop the boat without harming the occupants.
No asylum seekers are seen to be struck; the coastguard crew do a very poor job of targeting passengers if that was the objective. Next time fire a shoot or two across the bow.
