Some 11,544 athletes are participating in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The United States sent 558 privately funded athletes, Australia 422, all government funded. Were the U.S. Olympic team equal to the Australian team in per capita representation it would have 5,782 athletes at the games.

With the U.S. winning 116 medals (43 gold) to date and Australia 29 (8 gold), Australia obviously funds far too many uncompetitive athletes – minor celebrity Michelle “jiggling” Jenneke, for example.

Contrary to the pitch we’re given, Australia’s colossal Olympic effort makes us look like chumps, not champs.
