Australian Sports Commission chairman John Wylie argues for increased sports funding:
“The UK this year will invest around 60 per cent more than Australia in high-performance sport, made possible in large measure due to its national lottery,” he said.
“It’s difficult to avoid the conclusion that the British model is better and smarter than ours.”
Given that Great Britain’s population is 60 million and Australia’s only 23 million, it’s not surprising the Poms outspent us.
Here’s a thought: eliminate government funding, run a lottery and encourage companies and individuals interested in sport to donate. That system seems to work just fine for the USA.
