The Age reports on widespread unrest in Melbourne’s gay community:
The host of [radio station Joy 94.9’s] Saturday Magazine program, David McCarthy, launched a scathing attack on News Corp’s reporting when interviewing Karen Bryant, the chief executive of Midsumma.
“How is it that our festival can be sponsored by a news organisation that prints homophobic cartoons?” asked Mr McCarthy.
Ms Bryant replied that she had not seen the offending cartoon.
“Well, he does actually have a history of homophobic cartoons,” responded Mr McCarthy. “I don’t understand how an LGBTI community organisation can accept sponsorship from a company that regularly and methodically publishes homophobic cartoons.”
Within days of the interview, a petition on change.org called on Midsumma’s board to cut sponsorship ties with News Corp.
The Age doesn’t link to the petition, which has been online for over three weeks, for good reason: only 191 people have signed up.
